Wii don’t want more plastic tat, surely
I’ve been somewhat lazy on the writing front of late, though not aiding my writer’s block has been my current excursion to the US of A, which is now drawing to a close. However,as I sit here waiting to head to the airport for the flight home I find myself browing some of the gaming news I’ve missed out on and came across this little tid-bit: New Zelda to require MotionPlus add-on.
During my holiday here in the States one of the things I ended up doing is playing with Wii with some friends, and greatly enjoyed time on Super Smash Bros. Brawl and even a little dabble with Mario Kart Wii. Both were suitably enjoyable that I’ve been entertaining the notion of purchasing a Wii once again, but crap like that (and every Wii game makers seeming insistance that you should buy there plastic add-on) just drives me mad. I’m not sure yet what price point they’re pitching the Wii MotionPlus at, but I’m betting it’s enough that a full set of 4 won’t be too shy of 100 smackers, which really takes the piss.
I had gathered that games would probably work best witht he MotionPlus, but I was sort of hoping that they’d avoid instantly jumping into the whole ‘required’ aspect too soon, but the fact that Nintendo may well be leading that charge themselves. Right now my opinion on the Wii remains as it ever has been: a fun toy with a few games I’d like to play, but overpriced and not worth the money to get me to go buy one just yet.

Indeed. Nintendo are in too strong a position, they don’t need to drop the price because people are still snapping them up (though I think their slightly iffy drag on supply has something to do with that; savvy business work perhaps, but it continues to strike me as a bit off). As for games, well I’m not really sure what’s on the horizon for the Wii that looks all that interesting.

Considering that Motion Plus is already announced to come included with some new Tiger Woods game, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did the same for Zelda or some other first party game that comes out before that. If not, it’ll probably only run $10-15 like the wheel accessory if it’s cheap enough to come as a pack-in.
To be honest, I don’t really understand the complaint about the Wii having a constant stream of add-ons. There’s the nunchuck which you get one of with the system, the classic controller which isn’t entirely necessary but nice to have, and the wheel which comes packaged in with most of the games that require it (ExciteBots, Mario Kart). My only other accessory is the Perfect Shot gun, and that was cheaper than light guns in the past.
There really isn’t a lot of extra cost unless you’re buying a lot of each for friends to use, and if that’s the case make them pay for it themselves. The only downside is if you’re a lazy bastard and don’t want to bother attaching the right thing when you turn on a game.

MotionPlus is already out, and it costs $20 by itself. I’ve got no problem with a game requiring an extra peripheral if it improves the experience, though it’s a definite plus if more than one game uses it. This reminds me of Donkey Kong 64 requiring the expansion pak to work.

I pretty much agree with exactly everything you said. I once entertained the thought of purchasing a Wii, but seeing how it has evolved over its lifespan has instead removed it completely off my radar. After a price drop and a few more interesting games I might once again consider it, but I can’t see either of those things happening anytime soon.
